Murphy Homes was founded in 1974 by Joe Murphy, who moved to Alabama in the 1960s to serve in the Civil Rights Movement with VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America). Inspired by the spirit and potential of Huntsville, Joe combined his passion for service with his love for building, laying the foundation for a company dedicated to improving lives through better homes and stronger communities.

Through the 1980s and 1990s, Joe grew Murphy Homes into a leading Alabama home builder, developing neighborhoods and crafting homes known for exceptional quality and lasting value. His “Your Builder” philosophy became the company’s hallmark—a relentless focus on customer satisfaction, quality construction, and community engagement.

Today, Joe’s son Charlie Murphy carries on that legacy. After growing up sweeping job sites and learning the trade firsthand, Charlie took the reins in 2010 and has continued to lead Murphy Homes with the same dedication to excellence, honesty, and heart.
